Home-Register-Instructors-Classes-Dancing-Tradition The Private Collection didn't start as the private collection. True this is the 4th year labeled as such, but the first weekend of March, 2002 is really when the tradition began. That workshop was called the Lindy Shop and was a selfish venture by Tim Munsell, a recent transplant from Chicago. We say selfish because Tim wanted a Lindy Hop scene in Nashville for him to dance with. Having just moved from the "Lindy City" (or so it was nicknamed) the East Coast Swing in Nashville wasn't "good enough" for him (trust us, he's learned the errors of that mindset). What he didn't count on, what caught him off guard and changed the entire way he thought about dance events, were the friends he made, the community he saw, and smiles he witnessed. To this day he's maintained contact with many of friends he made that weekend, even married one of them just recently. The point is this, we all know the South East can dance, but just stop to think how much you love dancing at a South East event. Why is that? Is it because we all dance so incredibly well? While some do and some don't that ain't it! It's the people! And that's why we have the Private Collection. Until last year it was an event that brought outsiders to Nashville to teach us all a thing-or-two. Last year though, we sat back and said "Hey, there are tons of great dancing instructors. Let's feature them instead (and keep the weekend much cheaper in the process)." That's where we stand now, very proudly, as one of the few all encompassing weekends to feature the South East's own talent as both DJs and instructors. That's not to say that there is no one worth learning from outside our 10 state region, just look at the Mini Camp. But our tradition is celebrating our regional talent, our regional accomplishments, and our regional community. We sure hope you'll be joining us in Nashville, it will still be fun (we won't lie) but it won't quite be the same without you. |
